One of my pasttimes these days is caching - that is using a Global
Positioning System receiver (GPSr) to look for hidden packages - think
of it as a kind of electronically-assisted treasure hunt. Using the
handle OHMIKY (for OHio, MIchigan, and KentuckY), I currently have several
caches hidden around the Highland County, Ohio area. I also have begun
hiding caches in the Lexington, Kentucky area. Most of my caches are
listed on geocaching.com.
My Caches:
(I am currently playing with the idea of creating a private cache whose information would be available only on this page - so stay posted)
Caches listed on Geocaching.com:
(you will get better use of this site if you register at no charge)
Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT) -
GC2MKRQ
A 'normal' (not puzzle) cache and my only micro.
Do
Not Fold, Spindle or Mutilate - GCZZ0D
A puzzle cache based on old computing codes - the listing page
presents a standard punchcard such as crusty hackers of the sixties
and seventies will find familiar - in case you are too young to know,
or your memory malfunctions, these were commonly used for utility billing
and as a means to enter programs into computers. (Since
I moved out of the area and can no longer provide adequate maintenance,
this cache has been adopted by the Boyd family)
Eggs
& Bacon - GCZPHC
Another puzzle cache. I suppose there are people who dislike puzzles
as much as I dislike micros. So be it. This one has a treatise
about the coloration of bird's eggs and contains a concealed (though
not well-hidden) message regarding the actual location of the cache.
(Since I moved out of the area and can no longer
provide adequate maintenance, this cache has been adopted by the Boyd
family)
OHMIKY's
Day of the Bifids- GCZ2AX
This puzzle cache is based on a difficult cipher - which is more easily
solved if you can find the keyword, the method in which the table is
constructed and the period into which the plaintext was divided.
Sufficient information is on the original version of the page for someone
fairly familiar with cryptanalysis to solve it. After first find
and as time passes, more clues will be added and the difficulty lessened.
Check out my page about the bifid cipher to learn more. (Since
I moved out of the area and can no longer provide adequate maintenance,
this cache has been adopted by the Boyd family)
OHMIKY's
Scarabaeus Croceus - GCYPJX
This puzzle cache is also a three-stage multi. All stages are
in Paint Creek State Park (Ohio). The puzzle is based on a simple
substition cipher. (Since I moved out of the area
and can no longer provide adequate maintenance, this cache has been
adopted by the Boyd family)
Trilliaceae
Abundans (GCWBH7)
This is a 'regular' cache, that is it is straightforward and can be
found directly using the given coordinates: N 39° 11.502' W 083°
31.477' (Since I moved out of the area and can
no longer provide adequate maintenance, this cache has been adopted
by the Boyd family)
Do
We Know Dewey? (GCWKMA)
This is a puzzle cache - that is you will need to solve a puzzle in
order to find the cache. This one has a very simple set of puzzles,
and should be very easy to find once you have correctly solved the puzzles.
(Since I moved out of the area and can no longer
provide adequate maintenance, this cache has been adopted by the Boyd
family)
Stegaflage
(GCWDEM)
Another, more difficult puzzle cache. Solving this puzzle definitely
requires the use of a computer and probably the use of the internet.
(Since I moved out of the area and can no longer
provide adequate maintenance, this cache has been adopted by the Boyd
family)
Elementary
(GCWC8Z)
This puzzle is of medium difficulty and involves deciphering
a message. Depending on your reading experiences, this may prove
to be a walk in the park. (Since I moved
out of the area and can no longer provide adequate maintenance, this
cache has been adopted by the Boyd family)
Primary
Source (GCY6WB)
This is a puzzle with only a couple of hidden clues. (Since
I moved out of the area and can no longer provide adequate maintenance,
this cache has been adopted by the Boyd family)
My Travel Bugs
A travel bug is a trackable item that is placed in geocaches for other cachers to find and move to another cache. In some cases, the
travel bug will have a stated mission such as visiting a particular place or having its photo taken in certain settings. Trackable
items are a kind of proxy that can travel to places, meet people and do things on behalf of their owner. Travel bugs
are only one kind of trackable item - but they are the only kind I currently have travelling for me.
OHMIKY's
Travelling MiniCache
This travel bug is a small cache contained in an altoids tin.
Its mission is to travel from cache to cache and hand to hand as a sort
of bonus cache. (This travelbug has disappeared with a muggled cache
and is no longer available)
Gorilla
My Dreams
This travel bug is a plastic gorilla toy whose stated mission is to visit others of his kind - that is to have his photo taken in zoos. You can see his picture in the bottom photo to the right.
Chicken
Little the Little Chicken
A toy chicken (pictured in the second photo from the top on the right side of this page) with no particular stated goal but to travel from cache to cache.
Edgar
Poe's Gold Bug
Originally placed in my OHMIKY's Scarabaeus Croceus, the mission of this travel bug (pictured third photo from the top on the right side of this page) is to visit the grave of Edgar Poe and then to travel to Sullivan's Island, SC - the setting of Edgar Poe's story, "The Gold Bug."
Scarabeo
Ruber
This travel bug is my Scarabeo 500ie - one of the ways I get to cache
sites. If you see me on the road, feel free to log it.
